Just after the Pacific War, an impoverished rural family (they use the wing of a combat plane as their dining table) thwarts the ambition of its younger son Daikichi to be a novelist. His alcoholic father, his stepmother, his elder brother are all against him. His only supporter is his grandma, and she’s senile… Mine’s ambitious short is a superb pastiche of the tone, the style and the colour of long-vanished TV soaps.
