Vostok'

March 16th, 2003, 7.30 am. A cosmonaut walks through a no man’s land and climbs into a car aimed towards the sky: mission Vostok 1’ is about to attempt lift-off… Through seven episodes, Vostok’ takes over where the Soviet space missions of the 1960s had left things. These seven attempts follow the same scheme : a car, a man, an explosion. The only changes come from the place and the process, which are each time more spectacular and unexpected. This principle of repetition doesn’t only provide a good humoristic effect, it also underlines the stakes of the conquest of space during the Cold War, as well as the absurdity of these attempts. Presented just like a plastic model, Vostok’ is a funny and dreamlike film which shows people’s craziest hopes and their desperate and imposing attempts to escape from their life.
