The short experimental film "1998" is an edited completion of different films made in four different places of Berlin, Paris, Daegu and Oksan between February and October 1998. Each scene is about 15 seconds-long when 16 frames played ( about 10 seconds-long when 24 frame played). The content is representations of places related with family, family members, unfamiliar scenery that I ran across during my walks with a friend, my hometown Daegu, scenes from Paris Airport and streets on my way to Korea, or daily activities in Berlin.
I used ordinary 35mm photograph camera and black & white and color 16mm films. Since the format of photographs is different from that of the 16mm films, the 16mm film used on the photograph camera shows totally different pictures through the projector. Since the shooting itself was photographic but the way to show was cinematic, the two elements of photography and cinema are mixed. One photograph transforms into about five video frames through the projector. This media trans- formation is the most important motive in my film project. Due to the speed of projection, we cannot recognize the whole frames and miss several of them. If shown one frame a second, we can see what each image is. However, when shown 20 to 30 frames a second, we cannot recognize all the frames. Since the film "1998" has all different images in each frame, the film does not have continuity between frames - the continuity the similar 24 images bring to show movements on regular films. For this reason, each person gets a different impression from the film. However, I believe that the frames which are not recognized have an indirect influence on viewers' appreciation.
I left the films unedited for five years for purposes: I wanted to have distance between the past and the present. I believed that the five-year distance expands the memory of the past. My approach to 'Memory' and 'Time' is that the transformed pictures through technological media experiments induce some experiences which I did not think of before, stimulating latent memory.
