Justin Lee Collins is the ultimate ‘participant observer’, there is nothing he will not do. ‘Justin Lee Collins: Turning Japanese’ will follow our hero as he gets to indulge this to the full, and in so doing we’ll get a glimpse of what it’s like to live in Japan – a land of contrasts and contradictions – and what it’s like to be Japanese. He’ll be miles outside his comfort zone, punch-drunk with culture shocks and often terrified, but always ready to throw himself into every situation with gusto.
In episode one he learns about Japanese attitudes to relationships, marriage and sex. Justin attends ‘Love College’, visits a manufacturer and a collector of ‘love dolls’ and works as a host at one of the many bars in Tokyo where women can pay for his company for the evening.
In episode two he attempts to come to grips with Japanese comedy and entertainment. He travels to Osaka, the home of comedy in Japan, to try “Manzai” stand-up comedy. Running alongside Justin’s foray into stand-up comedy is his exploration of other bizarre examples of Japanese entertainment: he’s dressed as a samurai at a theme park based on 17th Century Tokyo, and is subjected to cruel food trials in a restaurant modelled on Alcatraz Prison Hospital.
In episode three Justin learns what life’s like for the 35 million people who live in Tokyo. One day of commuting as a Tokyo “salaryman” shows him all his needs to know; the streets are busy, the trains are packed and the flats are tiny. The Japanese have a system for everything though, even dealing with stress, and Justin investigates. Fighting his fear of dogs he finds a shop that allows you to rent one by the hour, and a small business that offers wound up workers the chance to smash crockery as a means of relaxation. Then he escapes to Hakodote in Northern Japan, a typical get away for stressed salarymen. Back in Tokyo, on Justin’s last day in Japan, he gets to indulge his love of karaoke. This is karaoke with a difference however, it’s a session at a day centre for the elderly. A heart-warming scene leaves Justin visibly moved and provides the highlight of his trip.
