Throughout its history, the Japanese Imperial family has nurtured many great artists. The pinnacle of artistic expression was achieved during the Meiji era in the late 19th century. After 200 years of isolation, Japan reopened its doors to international trade, and numerous works from the time put national pride on the line. From jet-black cloisonné enamels to intricate tapestries that look like real paintings and metal crafts that remain a mystery as to how they were created, this program features masterpieces from the Meiji era and tells the stories of the artists behind them.
