怀斯曼展现了人类与被捕获动物间紧张矛盾的关系。一方面是参观者对动物表现的崇拜与欣赏，他们带着各种观察工具，仿佛没有那些则无从观察；另一方面是动物园员工对其所依赖的权威地位的维护，无论是驯化、饲喂还是健康看护，人与动物间始终是种非自然的平衡。所有的对象都在观察，并无真正的客观存在。
